Youth Councillor McLean announced the Convocation ceremony for the 2023 graduates is on June 9 and a car parade on June 10 leaving Winfield Arena at 2:55 p.m. The public is invited to watch the parade from the sidewalk or around the school as to not take up road space.
Youth Councillor Haji echoed Youth Councillor McLean's comments and said it would be great to see everyone at the parade.
Councillor Irvine noted how much she had fun at Oyama Day and would like to thank those who organized for the invitation. She appreciated how it felt being part of the community and would like to see more family events planned around Lake Country moving forward.
Councillor McKenzie echoed Councillor Irvine and appreciated everyone showing up to Oyama Day. He would like to see Council put in a float, and explore the idea of a dunk tank. He regretfully noted the passing of a former Oyama Fire Hall Chief and acknowledges what he had done for Oyama and the surrounding community. He sends best wishes and condolences to the family.
Councillor Brett echoed Oyama Day was amazing. She appreciated the opportunity to be involved in the community and participate in conversation with community members. She looks forward to strategic planning sessions with Council in the future and learning more. She noted fire season is upon us and would like to remind everyone to be careful.
Councillor Patel echoed Councillor Brett reminding everyone to be careful as fire season approaches. He noted there was a brush fire in The Lakes last week and emphasizes how great it was to the community on communicating it on Facebook to be dealt with efficiently. The cause of the fire is unknown, however does seem to be human-caused. He echoed how much fun he had at Oyama Day handing out pancakes.
Councillor Reed echoed carefulness around fire season and noted the phone number *5555 to report wildfires. She emphasized the importance of reporting a wildfire if you see one and to not assume someone else already has. She enjoyed her time at Oyama Day, with special thanks to the fire department, Sparky, and volunteers for their organizational efforts. She extended thank you to the parks department for the improvements at Whiskey Cove and Gable Beach Park, community members enjoyed the new picnic table at Gable Beach all weekend. She reported grass at Gable Beach Park has over grown a sign near a water intake and should be trimmed to view the sign. She announced excitement surrounding pothole repairs near Whiskey Cove, north stretch of Carrs Landing Road, and completion of the south stretch of Carrs Landing Road.
Councillor Lewis echoed all comments about the fun had at Oyama Day, and the importance of caution during fire season. He congratulated Councillor Irvine on her first grandchild born today.
Mayor Ireland agreed how great Oyama Day was and extended thanks to the Oyama community. The event was well organized and the silent auction was great. He appreciated the effort of those who came from outside the community and participated in the fun. He encouraged the rest of Lake Country to get involved next year. He noted it is great to see the repairs along Carrs Landing Road. He is excited for the students to graduate this week and encouraged the community to come out for the parade. He echoed care during fire season, advised to stop throwing cigarettes out of the window and announced campfires at public spaces are not permitted.
Fire Chief Darren Lee announced the Kamloops Fire Centre is putting a campfire ban starting tomorrow. He noted the community can expect an immediate announcement for Lake Country.
